White House Seeks Comments on LTSS, Healthy Aging

While preparing for the 2015 White House Conference on Aging<http://cms.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=c0033d065eadb44cbd20725a3&id=9c9031732d&e=efecf6cf3f>, the White House is asking for public comment on two new policy briefs: “Long Term Services and Supports,” and “Healthy Aging.” Here is an opportunity an opportunity to focus attention on the needs and concerns of American Indian and Alaska Native elders and caregivers.

  *   Long-Term Services and Supports Policy Brief<http://cms.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c0033d065eadb44cbd20725a3&id=de818872d7&e=efecf6cf3f>
  *   Healthy Aging Policy Brief<http://cms.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=c0033d065eadb44cbd20725a3&id=d730d0cd22&e=efecf6cf3f>

Once every decade the White House holds a national conference on aging to identify and advance actions to improve the quality of life of older Americans. Past conferences helped build momentum for major policies and legislation including Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the Older Americans Act.

National MFP Evaluation Captures Lessons Learned

The Money Follows the Person (MFP) initiative transitions elderly and disabled Medicaid beneficiaries from long-term care facilities back to the community. A new national evaluation,The Right Supports at the Right Time: How Money Follows the Person Programs Are Supporting Diverse Populations in the Community<http://cms.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=c0033d065eadb44cbd20725a3&id=2d9dc2d423&e=efecf6cf3f>, examines how six state MFP grantees are successfully meeting diverse community needs.

There is also an MFP – Tribal Initiative that helps tribes work toward the same goal of transitioning elders and people with disabilities out of facilities and back into the community.

Traditional Foods Back on the Table for Alaska Native Elders

Thanks to a 2014 amendment to the U.S. Farm Bill, it is finally legal to serve traditional foods such as wild-caught salmon, moose, and caribou in hospitals, schools, and long-term care facilities. That is good news for the elders who live at “Utuqqanaat Inaat,” the long-term senior care facility at Maniilaq Health Center in far northwestern Alaska.

Watch media coverage<http://cms.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=c0033d065eadb44cbd20725a3&id=69bcb24cb8&e=efecf6cf3f> from KTVA-TV, Kotzebue, AK.

Speaking of traditional foods, May is National Salad Month, and studies have now shown the benefits of greens eaten traditionally by AI/AN people.

  * Lamb’s quarter (most U.S. regions) is an excellent source of manganese, calcium, fiber, potassium, copper, and vitamins A, B2, B6, and C.
  * Ramps (wild leeks) (eastern North America) contain vitamins A and C, iron, selenium, chromium, and fiber.
  * Nasturtium (Plains) contains high quantities of vitamin C and iron.
  * Seaweed (California, Pacific Northwest, Alaska) was recently included on a list of the 11 most nutrient-dense foods.
